In early March, I met a client on the steps in Bryant Park to drop off envelopes that I had lettered for her Memorial Day weekend wedding. I gave her a peak at the final product, handed over the goods, and after we exchanged pleasantries, I said to her, “May is so far away! Everything will go on just as planned- I’m sure of it!” Boy, was I wrong.

Fast forward to August (how is it August?). Life as we know it has completely changed. To go cocktails exist in NYC, I have 10 different patterns of masks, and slowly, the world is beginning to reopen. And this means, that events are back, baby!

I’ve always loved working with clients for weddings and private events. They have a vision, and you, as a creator, get to make it come alive. And while my art adds meaning to an event on a regular day, this summer, it became extra special. These summer events weren’t just dinner parties or receptions, they were small, intimate gatherings for couples that had their weddings cancelled, friends that haven’t seen each other in months, and a family that had to cancel their Dad’s milestone birthday trip to Italy. They were different than what was originally envisioned, but the end result was still the same. People were happy to be together and love was at the forefront of each and every party. Planners were extra thoughtful and wanted to ensure that each part of the gathering was perfect. To be honest, these were some favorite events to date because of how intimate they all were.

Eventually, things will get back to normal, and large events will start up again, but until then, let’s continue to be creative (and safe) in how we bring people together. Listen to your clients, be flexible, adapt and improvise. After all, love always wins and the party must go on—-even in quarantine.
